About Sunflowers

Sunflowers are the epitome of summer. With their bright yellow petals and tall green stems, it's easy to see why they're so popular. There are many things you can learn about this wonderful flower, which is often used as a symbol of happiness and congratulations. We'll tell you everything you need to know about sunflowers, from interesting facts to how to grow your own.

The sunflower has many different meanings around the world. Various cultures interpret it to mean anything from positivity and strength to admiration and loyalty.

Sunflowers are said to represent good luck and long-lasting happiness in Chinese culture, which is why they are frequently given at graduations and the start of a new business.

The ancient Greeks believed that sunflowers were drawn to the sun due to the nymph Clytie's devotion to Apollo, the God of the Sun. He, too, loved her at first, but then shifted his affections to another nymph. Clytie told the other nymph's father in a jealous rage, and as punishment, he buried her alive. Outraged, Apollo transformed Clytie into a sunflower, but her love for him was so strong that she followed him across the sky each day, just as sunflowers do.

Helianthus is the scientific name for sunflower. It is derived from the Greek words "helios" (sun) and "anthus" (flower).

Do sunflowers follow the sun?

Both yes and no.  When sunflowers are young, they track the sun throughout the day, a phenomenon known as heliotropism. They are thought to do this because they, like humans, have a circadian rhythm in which they face east at dawn and gradually turn west as the sun moves across the sky before resetting themselves at night.  Mature sunflowers no longer follow the sun and only face east.  This is thought to be due to the fact that they react more strongly to light in the morning, so facing east allows them to stay warmer, attracting more pollinators.

How tall do sunflowers grow?

Sunflowers can grow to be as small as 50cm (20 inches) or as tall as 4.8m, depending on the type (16ft). The current world record is 9.17m (30ft).
